AMERICAN DOUGHNUT KITCHEN'S STORY
Australia's best hot jam doughnuts
In 1950, friends Arnold Bridges and David Christie purchased American Doughnut Kitchen from William Kither.
They traded from Queen Victoria Market frying hot jam doughnuts with the original recipe that hasn't changed since.
Crisp outside, soft inside, rolled in sugar and filled with rasp-plum jam that heats up inside the hot doughnut.
People queued then, and they still queue now. In fact, ADK has one of Melbourne's most famous queues.
Three generations, one recipe
Arnold & Dave built the business at QVM over some forty years before their passings in 1996 and 1997 respectively. They turned a market van into a Melbourne institution.
The late 1990's saw the baton pass to the second generation.
In 2023, the second generation retired
and Arnold's grand-daughter Belinda and husband Justin Donaghey officially became the third generation owners.
Belinda & Justin had already been working in the business for many years before officially taking the reigns.
Only two places in the world
You can only get the original ADK doughnuts in two places: our van at Queen Victoria Market and our shop at Prahran Market.
We are not franchised and have no intention to franchise. If it's not at QVM or Prahran, it's not us.
Come hungry, grab a bag hot from the fryer, and taste why Melbourne has been lining up for 76 years.
